Harrison Foundation donates £8,000 to specialist Blyth primary school

The Dales specialist primary school in Blyth, Northumberland, is set for an upgrade to its IT provision as well as expanded outdoor learning facilities following a donation from the Harrison Foundation.

The £8,000 grant will fund the purchase of new computers for the school children to use in class as well as the construction of a fire pit shelter and seating for all year around cooking.

The school is seeking to help the children develop knowledge of planting and cooking using an open fire, learning about fire safety and how to plant their own vegetables.

The Dales provides education for children with a variety of additional needs that may not otherwise be met in a mainstream setting. It is also home to one of six Harrison Centres for Social Mobility, which is based on the ‘train in the playground’, which has been extensively featured on television and in newspaper articles.

Sally Collins, Deputy Head Teacher at The Dales said: “We are extremely grateful to the Harrison Foundation for enabling the opportunity to improve life chances and skills for our children. The funding will go towards an all-weather fire pit shelter, which will help our children develop valuable life skills. Using the fire pit for cooking helps children be engaged and learn how to be safe in different environments. The children will be able to grow seasonal vegetables in the garden to cook using the fire pit and make outdoor learning more accessible to children in the colder months. Thank you for helping to make a difference.”
